Full Minkah Fitzpatrick Scouting Report

Started at Alabama as a Cornerback, but due to injuries at Safety he moved mid-season to FS. All-American defensive back who leads by example and not vocally. Great Height and weight for either and outside corner or as a Free Safety. His great arm length will be a factor in the one on one matchups.

Athletic Ability is Elite, insanely quick, very flexible hips, great balance, explosiveness, change of direction and leaping ability. Good Mental Processing, quick to recognize the run/pass, usually can identify pre-snap on where the play is going to go. Great Competitive Toughness, always willing to put his body on the line, very physical, will come back into the game even though he sustained a minor injury, played through a bruised kidney in the championship game. Great Play Speed, has the deep speed to maintain distance with the fast opponents, sideline to sideline speed, impressive closing speed. Good play strength, has thumping ability, nice job shedding blocks, uses his physical play style to win consistently vs opponents. Great Man Coverage, plays very tight with opponent, like him in press man and in bump and run. Best at diagnosing the route concept when in press. Good Zone Coverage, reads the eyes of the QB well and can sense the when the play will be a short throw. Good Open Field Tackler, will drive through his opponent and wrap him up through the ground, will consistently make the tackle vs average opponents. Great Run Support, sets the outside edge well, comes downhill immediately when he recognizes run. Takes good angles vs the stretch runs. Puts a big hit on the RB. Great Ball Skills, absolute playmaker, will be cable of making many INTs because of his great hands and concentration. His athletic ability will be useful when returning an INT, good chance for a pick-6.

Not perfect Mental Processing, needs to recognize the pick play a little better, when in off man or cover 2, he can be confused by certain deep route concepts. Wouldn’t use him as a box safety. May need to communicate more with his defense.

Overall, Fitzpatrick is going to be a star in the league. He has an incredible level of athletic ability that will give him very high potential. Some scouts are mixed on whether he should play safety or corner. I would love to see him be used in a press man defense where he can show his lockdown ability.

Full Derwin James Scouting Report

Played multiple positions at Florida State, mainly used as a SS. He is tall Defensive back, well built, good weight, arm length is solid.

Athletic Ability is Great, one of the most explosive defensive backs in the draft, shows quality quickness. Good Mental Processing, could be very useful as a QB spy, usually can recognize run vs the play action. Great Competitive Toughness, vicious tackles, puts body on the lines, stays with the play even though it’s highly unlikely he will make a play. Great Play Speed, his speed will allow him to be apart of any play, impressive closing speed, shows great acceleration and pursuit. Great Play Strength, very physical defender, can win vs majority of other, his strength will allow him to be useful in the box, capable of shedding blockers. Good Man coverage skills, his athletic ability will allow him to maintain with every TE, does not allow much space when playing press man. Good open field tackler, wraps up, slams his opponent to the ground, not much of a problem when dealing with big players.

His gruesome leg injury a couple seasons ago will be a red flag for some teams. He hasn’t been the exact same player since his injury. His zone coverage needs work, needs to read the eyes of the QB better and have a better sense of the WR route concept. Has been hesitant to make a hit on bigger RBs, needs better to take better angles. His ball skills need to improve, has missed multiple opportunities to make an interception.

Overall, James does have potential. His athletic ability will be very useful in many situations. I would like him to be used as a Cover 2 strong safety, who could also be put in the box on running situations.

Full Justin Reid Scouting Report

Strong Safety for Stanford. The defense played a lot of man-free. His job was primarily to play man vs the slot. He has the size of an NFL Safety, great build, good height, about average arm length.

Great Athletic Ability, shows explosiveness, fluidity in the hips, some leaping ability, foot quickness could be better. Good Mental Processing, can tell he focuses on film – especially for red zone defense, quicker to diagnose to the play, recognizes WR screens. Good Competitive Toughness, a willing hitter, puts his body on the line to make a play. Great Play Speed, showed closing speed, some deep speed, ran very well at the combine. Good Play Strength, has all the physical tools needed, will win vs the below average opponents. Good Man Coverage, best when in off-man, plays physical, best vs short and deep routes. Good Open-Field Tackler, puts force into his tackles, more than a catch tackler, solid angle tackler. Good Ball Skills, finds the football deep downfield and goes up to go get the football, has some anticipation skills.

Needs to work on zone coverage, has struggled to identify his correct responsibility, been confused by confusing routes. In run support, he will come downhill and attempt to be a part of the action. Has been fooled by the RPOs, needs to improve diagnosing the route concept. Needs to look back for the football when covering a defender down the field. Will miss some tackles because he attempts tackles too high.

Overall, Reid has had a couple of average games, but there are some games where he played very well. He can become a good starter at the next level if given the opportunity.

Full Ronnie Harrison Scouting Report

Strong Safety for Alabama. Used in as a box safety. Great height and weight, has the frame add another 5 to 10 pounds of muscle.

Athletic Ability is good, nice core strength giving him good balance, shows explosive power, smooth moving laterally, hips are solid overall. Good Mental Processing, usually identifies play direction, if he sees the opportunity to make a hit on the QB he will take that shot. Good Competitive Toughness, will put his body on the line to make a big stop, gets in piles, will play through injuries. Great Play Strength, very powerful hitter, he can deal with some offensive lineman – mainly average or lower, can stop an opponent in their tracks, can play box in the NFL. Good man coverage, especially vs the bigger opponents, very tight coverage in the short to intermediate ranges, and will handle the big opponents deep down the field, shows that he can find the football. Great Open-Field Tackler, clean wrap-up of the opponent, his great strength will really be seen here, uses all his force on key short yardage situations. Great Run Support, comes downhill immediately when he recognizes run, will not shy away from the big RB, he will make a hit on the player.

He is not going to be the fastest safety prospect, does not have the great range to be used as a single high safety, but he is still solid and may make a big play from time to time. His speed will limit his coverage ability, so he shouldn’t be used to go up against a speedy WR and his overall zone will not be that wide. He needs to do a better job of finding the football when covering a WR deep downfield.

Overall, Harrison can be a good prospect in the league, but he will need to work on his overall speed to really be one of the best.  A team that would use him as a box safety would be a perfect fit for him.

Full DeShon Elliott Scouting Report

Played as a FS in multiple different looks, a lot of cover 2 and Man Free schemes. A tall safety, with good build, long arms and broad shoulders.

Athletic Ability is great, shows explosive downhill ability, very balanced player, great lateral movement. Good mental processing, reads the eyes of the QB very well, quick to recognizes WR screens and understands how to blow up the play, often recognizes the design of the play better than most. Good Competitive Toughness, not afraid to put a big hit on his opponent, plays with a lot of confidence. Great Play Speed, great closing speed, allows him to cover sideline to sideline. Capable of maintaining speed with most opponents. Solid Play Strength, stronger than the average FS, will play physical with opponents. Great Zone Coverage, recognizes opponents route very quickly, loves jumping the short to mid routes. Has a very large cover radius and is capable of playing as a single high safety. Good open field tackler, wraps up his tackles and goes thru his opponent to the ground. Good Run Support, not afraid to hit to bigger RB, will get in the middle of a pile. Understands his rules on outside contain, will come downhill and fill his responsibility. Great Ball skills, he is a playmaker, tremendous focus, great hands and will not drop the easy INT opportunity, times the ball perfectly for the pass breakups, will force fumbles in the league.

Could improve his strength, wouldn’t consider him liable to be used in the box, struggles with shedding blockers. His man coverage needs work, mainly in press man, struggles to mirror his opponent. I believe he would have to work on it for the red zone purposes. There are times that he will hesitate to make a hit, only did it vs an elusive player, but it killed his momentum and missed the tackle. Showed fatigue vs a pass heavy offense.

Overall, Elliott is a special Free Safety, he is not receiving much attention, but deserves much more. He is a playmaker who will consistently end this season with multiple interceptions. He would fit best in a cover 2 system, but a cover 3 would definitely work in his favor.

Full Jessie Bates III Scouting Report

Free Safety and sometimes punt Returner for Wake Forest. Played a lot of Man Free, cover 2 and 3. He is a tall safety with a longer frame, long arms and legs, but doesn’t have the weight to match it. Making his appearance to be lanky, but still has some muscle.

Athletic Ability is great, quickness, has balance, moves very well, hips are not an issue, shows explosive movements. Good mental processing, recognizes the play concept – especially screens, nice job of understanding the route concept. Great Play Speed, shows acceleration, deep speed and closing speed, kid has it all, could be useful in the return game. Good Man Coverage, excellent vs deep routes, has a great break when the receiver releases from his STEM. Great Zone Coverage, very rangy, gets to his responsibility quickly, has better anticipation in cover 2, when he doesn’t have to focus on the entire field, reads the eyes of the QB well.

Needs more consistency with the level of aggressiveness he plays with. At home vs Florida State, he was on another level compared to everyone else and that’s because he really showed his aggressive play style, but on the road, he was about average. His slim frame will limit his play strength, will not be physically dominant and will struggle with run support. His Open-Field Tackling goes with his aggressiveness, he needs to be more consistent. A catch tackler when facing an opponent head on and will dive at the feet of an opponent when attempting an angle tackle. Needs to take more advantage of his interception opportunities, marginal tracking ability.

Overall, Bates III has potential, but he needs to be more consistent. If he was the same player that I saw vs Florida State, he could easily be a first-round pick. Because of his intelligence, he can start sooner than most rookies, but I would like to see him add more muscle weight to become a starter.

Full Armani Watts Scouting Report

4-year starter at Texas A&M. A little undersized for the average NFL Safety, but it’s not far from average. Good Build for size.

Good Athletic Ability, quickness, has nice leaping ability, flexible, fluid hips, well balanced. Good mental Processing, easy for him to recognize run/pass – including the play actions. Good Competitive Toughness, has the confidence needed to be a defensive back in the league, when making contact with an opponent he will throw everything he has at him. Good Play Speed, rangy, downhill acceleration is impressive, has closing speed. Good Play Strength, has hit stick ability, plays stronger than he actually is. Good Zone Coverage, better at recognizing the route concept, reads the eyes of the QB well and adjusts to get a chance to jump the route, best vs the short routes. Good Run Support, comes downhill to attack the ball carrier and he is not afraid to hit the much bigger RB, solid job at being the outside contain when playing closer to the LOS. Good Ball Skills, nice hands, has instincts, capable of making a late game INT, takes advantage of RBs who carry the ball improperly.

In Man Coverage, he has been caught guessing, may struggle vs the big targets – TEs. His open-field tacking was atrocious in 2016, needed to wrap up better, poor technique, inconsistent use of body, dives at feet. It was bad, but he has improved – showing better technique and wrapping up more of his tackles and using his hit-stick trait at more appropriate times. but he still has some ways to go.

Overall, Watts is a solid to good prospect. He has playmaking abilities and if in the right situation he could be a starter very soon. He has the ability to be in a Man-Free scheme, but I would like him to play in a cover 2 or 3 look primarily.

Full Marcus Allen Scouting Report

SS for Penn State. Moved around from Cover 2 look to box safety. Good Height and weight, physical stature. A team leader in the locker room.

Solid Athletic Ability, needs better change of direction, foot quickness, should improve his control of his speed – overruns his opponent. Great Competitive Toughness, absolutely vicious player, thrives making contact, fights hard to make a play, dives for a loose football in a pile, can come up clutch in big time situations. Good Play speed, has downhill acceleration, some closing speed. Great Play Strength, hard hitter, stronger than some TEs, destroys his opponents with great upper and lower body strength. Good Man Coverage, can cover the bigger opponents like TEs and large WRs tightly. Great Run Support, comes downhill when he recognizes run, good vision to find the gap and fell it. Good Open-Field Tackler, wraps up, puts force in his tackles.

He gets fooled on play direction, bites hard on play action. Tends to leave his feet early when attempting a tackle. Doesn’t have a large enough radius to be used as a single high safety, needs to be more aware of the receivers in his area. Angles need to improve in run support. He needs to have better instincts to make a play on the ball, takes false steps in coverage. His lateral quickness should must improve at the next level.

Overall, Allen is a solid prospect. He should be used as a box safety at the next level. He will be a voice in the locker room. May start out as a special teams player and maybe down the road he could become a starter.

Full Kyzir White Scouting Report

SS for West Virginia. They moved him around a little bit. In the box, man-up vs the slot, cover 2 looks. Has the size of an NFL Strong Safety, great height and weight, large hands, long arm length, sculpted body frame.

Athletic Ability is solid, needs to improve his change of direction, not very explosive, wouldn’t consider him agile. Good Mental Processing, not fooled by play action, usually recognizes run/pass. Great Competitive Toughness, aggressive play style, a thumper, high motor, does not give up on a play. Good Play Strength, will demolish some opponents, usually wins vs average competition. Good open-field tackler, vicious tackler, goes through his opponent, nice pad level. Great Run Support, great angels, will come downhill to make a hit on the big RB.

Does not have much deep speed, possibly why he didn’t run the 40 at the combine. Loses vs average speed opponents. Does not have the hip flexibility to be used for man coverage, does not open his hips quick enough for the deep routes, guesses some on route conception. Doesn’t have a large range for zone coverage, his speed will limit him for what he is capable of. Has had some interceptions this past season, but he does not have the instincts that a lot of quality safeties have.

Overall, White seems to be an average prospect. He will likely be a reserve player. His best fit would be used as a box safety. If he were to gain some more weight, he could transition to an OLB role. I do not see a very high ceiling.

Full Godwin Igwebuike Scouting Report

3 year starting SS at Northwestern where he was a captain of that defense. They moved him in the box to help attribute to the run defense. Also used as a nickel backer. A little undersized for a Safety, girthy player, a lot of build, arms are longer than average.

Athletic Ability is solid, his combine performance helped his grade, on film he looks stiff in his hips, lacks change of direction, does not have the lateral quickness needed for short areas and not very explosive. Solid Competitive toughness, shows effort, obviously cares for the game of football by being voted captain. Solid Play Speed, ran faster than I expected at the Combine, his straight-line speed is noteworthy. Good Play Strength, shows his power by making a big hit on his opponent, difficult for receivers to block him. Solid Zone Coverage, reads the QB well and transitions from one WR to the next. Good Run Support, will come downhill once run is recognized and attempt to be a part of the action.

He has struggled with mental processing, doesn’t always identify his man in crossing routes, not always aware of his surroundings, can take some unnecessary risks at times. He does not have the hips to be useful in man coverage, can’t open-up quick enough to help with the deep routes, allows too much space, struggles to identify the route concept. Has missed several tackles, his timing for tackle attempts are inconsistent, doesn’t wrap up. He has the long arms to make a lot of pass break-ups, but he does not have the hands that the average S has. He has missed easy interceptions before and some at crucial points in the game.

Overall, Igwebuike is below average in my opinion. He should consider changing positions because he performs below average in coverage. A team may end up drafting him because of his combine performance, but I was not impressed by his film. I would use him only as a nickel LB and on special teams.
