Defensive Ends

Full Bradley Chubb Scouting Report

Played as a 4-3 DE at NC State and played mainly in a 5 or 7 technique. He has long arms with a built frame. He has the size of a pure pass rusher.

Athletic Ability is great, very quick, balanced, great flexibility, nice lateral movement, he has explosive movements. Great competitive Toughness, shows consistent fiery passion throughout the game. Has extreme amount of confidence in his game. Great Play Speed, has enough speed to be considered as a 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 DE. His speed is too fast for almost all offensive lineman. Great Pass Rusher, he has nice bend, will consistently force pressure on the QB, will be in the backfield before anyone else, his athletic ability helps him with many moves. Good vs the Run, ends stretch plays to his side by getting frontside and know how to blow up the plays coming his way. Great use of hands, quick and large hands, times his swipe of the hands, very good placement. Great upfield burst, explodes off the LOS and gains a lot of ground quickly. Pad level remains low, creates great penetration consistently. Great pursuit, can chase down a RB in the middle of the field, great closing speed.

Solid Mental Processing, needs to be aware of situations, people can get under his skin and he may get unsportsmanlike penalties. Coaches may have trouble trying to control his outbursts. Solid Play Strength, it’s not really his style of play, won’t be a bull rusher or a brick wall as a DE. Needs to have a better pass rush plan, does the same moves over and over. Hand punches could be stronger.

Overall, Chubb is a special EDGE rusher. I would like him to stay as a 4-3 DE because of how fast he is coming out of his 3-point stance. I’d expect him to be a starter for whoever drafts him early. The only real concern I have is the immaturity at times. Needs to clean that up.

Full Harold Landry Scouting Report

Played as 4-3 DE at Boston College. Played a lot in the 7. He has the body of a 3-4 OLB, longer body with long arms, has some build on upper and lower body.

Athletic Ability is great, shows his explosive ability off the LOS but even better when standing up, great balance, very fluid hips, quick player. Good Mental Processing, reads run/pass well, identifies the trap and screen plays before they develop. Good Competitive Toughness, no matter the score he always fights to get in the backfield, always around the football, consistently hustling. Great Play Speed, is too fast for the average offensive lineman, his first step is very quick, he is capable of getting passed the trap because he is faster than the pulling guard, can mirror his fast opponents. Great Pass Rusher, true speed rusher, great bend, and had very high production when he was able to play a full season. Good use of hands, his long arms help him tremendously, quick hands and aware of when to time his swipe. Great upfield burst, shows the acceleration, keeps his pads low, can be so fast that he is in the backfield before the handoff. Good pursuit, willing to chase down a RB who looks to be breaking away, closing speed to track down QB for the sack.

Needs to improve on play strength, not a bulldozer type of defender, will struggle vs strong offensive lineman. Could have a better plan when rushing the passer, tends to use the same moves over and over. His speed on turf looked a little slower compared to grass. Solid run stop, needs to work on outside contain more, will get pushed around.

Overall, Landry is going to be a 3-4 OLB in the league. If he was a little stronger maybe he would fit in a wide technique at 4-3 DE. I’d expect Landry to start day one and have a good amount of sacks if he can stay healthy.

Full Marcus Davenport Scouting Report

Played as a 3-4 OLB at UTSA. He has the size of a 4-3 DE, excellent height and weight for a 3-4 OLB. Long arms with Elite build.

Athletic Ability is great, balanced, very explosive, quick. Surprising how well he can move with that size. Great Competitive Toughness, a true fighter, works hard to get in the backfield, will come up clutch in goal line situations, his effort alone would be elite. Good play speed, could be used out in space, has an above average tackling radius. Great Play Strength, overpowered every opponent he faced – very impressive even though it may have not been SEC competition, great upper body strength, required double teams. Good Pass Rusher, has a great Rip move, shows his bend ability, he can be moved inside to bull rush guards, strength really plays apart here as he consistently forces pressure on the QB. Good use of Hands, powerful hands, good placement. Good Upfield burst, his first step is faster than any teammate or opponent he has faced, gains a lot of ground in the first step and keeps his pads level low, exploding into his opponent. Good pursuit, puts in the effort of chasing down a scrambling QB and he shows that he does have closing speed to make the tackle in short areas.

Needs to recognize the play design a little faster. Recognizing run is what he should work on most. He will likely have to work on coverage skills if he would want to stay as an outside linebacker. Not fully aware of what he is capable of doing with his measurables.

Overall, Davenport has a lot of potential. With a little bit of help it’s easy to believe he could be one of the best edge rushers in the league, but he is still raw in some spots. He should stay in a 3-4 system, but his 4-3 DE size will intrigue many teams. May be in for just pass rush situations to start out, but then he will likely become at least a good starter.

Full Arden Key Scouting Report

3-4 OLB at LSU, had more of a down season compared to what he is capable of. Prior to the season he had to take a leave from the team in what was a personal/family matter. Key is rare specimen in terms of size, he has great height and is well built, very long arms and legs.

Athletic Ability is great, quick player, nice lateral movement, very fluid hips, explosive ability, excellent balance. Good Mental Processing, recognizes screens, quick to adjust mid play when he recognizes the design, times the snap well, understands how to disrupt a counter play. Great Play Speed, his speed is too fast for OL, and his speed will make him useful out in open space, faster than most edge players. Good Pass Rusher, bend is great, will be a pure speed rusher, has a numerous amount of moves to get to the QB, forces consistent pressure. Good use of hands, first to make contact vs opponent, will get his hands inside, gives a nice shove to keep him off his opponent. Great Upfield Burst, can be the first off the line of scrimmage, stays low when rushing the passer. Great Pursuit, great closing speed that allows him to chase scrambling QBs and RBs in the middle of the field.

Competitive Toughness will be in question, when Key to his time away from the team he didn’t come back as the same player. Didn’t try as hard consistently, was coasting when he could have made a play on the ball, maybe he wasn’t in shape because he looked tired at times. There are a lot of possibilities on why he dropped off, but the fact that he did drop will be a red flag to many teams. Solid Play Strength, he will struggle to shed blocks vs strong OL, not always going to make the tackle vs a big RB. Solid vs the Run, doesn’t do a great job if he is not the first to make contact – will allow a lot movement, needs to do a little better at outside contain – but overall, he is still solid.

Overall, Key has potential. He will play as 3-4 OLB in the league and should be used on every passing situations. He may have dropped off a little, but if given the right-minded head coach, Key may be one of the best pass rushers in the league.

Full Hercules Mata'afa Scouting Report

Played in a 3 tech DT at Washington State, because of his size – average height, weight is good for height, slimmer frame not much girth, long arms with good build.

Good Athletic Ability, good body control, quick and shows explosiveness. Needs to have better balance and change of direction – especially in open space. Good Mental Processing, recognizes play direction, knows how to get skinny through the POA. Good Competitive Toughness, high motor player, has confidence in his abilities. Good Play speed, elusive, can be used for stunts, too fast for average OL, shows acceleration, useful as a QB Spy, can reach the RB BEFORE THE HANDOFF! Good Play strength, his battles vs the much stronger guards will help him when facing the average OTs, plays physical. Good vs run, his quickness makes allows him to always have a chance to make a play on the RB, good tackler, deadly vs stretch plays. Good Use of hands, nice rip move, very quick hands, placement is good. Great Upfield burst, very quick off the LOS, stays low and explodes into his opponent. Good pursuit, will chase down an average scrambling QB, capable of catching the bigger backs with his closing speed.

His pass rush will need work when he transitions to the EDGE. Doesn’t have much bend, does not have a wide range of moves. Would not consider him a speed rusher. He will lose to very strong opponents. His hands need more force at times.

Overall, Hercules has the best name in the draft. He has work to do, but there is potential there. I would like to see Mata’afa stay in a 4-3 system where he can keep his hand in the dirt. Would likely start out as a role player and maybe become a starter if he progresses.

Full Sam Hubbard Scouting Report

4-3 DE at Ohio State. Good Height and weight to be an NFL 4-3 DE. Average arm length, solid build, average waist size.

Athletic Ability is solid, some quickness and explosiveness, solid enough to be used out in space in coverage, hips are a little tight, not agile, change of direction is not there. Great Mental processing, the smartest EDGE prospect in this class, recognizes when OL will attempt a cut block, identifies Run/Pass, knows play direction, stays home, rarely fooled by the play action, reads the exact gap the RB will take. Good Competitive Toughness, shows consistent level of effort to get in the backfield, a competitor. Good Play Strength, will win vs the average opponent, can shed a block if in the right position. Good Pass Rusher, vs a LT he shows some moves, some bend. Good Vs run, understands outside contain, recognizes the traps/counters and closes the gap. Good Use of Hands, nice swipe move – grabs wrist of OT and pushes down. Good Upfield burst, explodes into opponent, best shown when coming out of a 4pt stance. Good Pursuit, his effort will out play his speed. Effort puts him always near the football and close to catching the ball carrier.

Not impressive speed, not going to be considered a speed rusher, does not have much closing speed. Needs to have a better plan when rushing the passer, repetitive moves. Not a brick wall in stopping the run. His hand use could have better consistency with placement.

Overall, Hubbard is a solid prospect. Only his mental processing pops out for his traits, but he is solid in every category. He would bring great depth to start out his career and maybe down the road he will get his chance.

Full Kemoko Turay Scouting Report

3-4 OLB rusher at Rutgers, was one of the best edge rushers when he was a freshman, but has taken a step back since his shoulder injurie/s. He is more of a lanky edge player, arms are a little longer than average, good height, weight matches.

Athletic Ability is great, flexible hips, quickness is a big plus, agility, has leaping ability, moves very well in open space. Great Competitive Toughness, still hustling despite the major blowout, will chase down opponent all the way to the end zone if needed, will play through injuries. Great Play Speed, has nice acceleration, elusive ability, can be used in coverage. Good Pass Rusher, really showed off at the senior bowl, great bend, speed rusher, has the traits to become a good pass rusher in the NFL. Good Upfield Burst, has suddenness twitch, quick to the POA. Good pursuit, has closing speed and can prevent some RBs from turning the corner.

Needs to diagnose play direction quicker. His low play strength will get him pushed around easily, won’t see him win vs an opponent head on. He is not a run stuffer, could improve his tackling ability, doesn’t do a great job of going through his tackle. His hands are quick but need consistent placement and more power. His pass rush production was very low, and he did not have much of plan.

Overall, Turay is a Raw prospect with potential. A good coach can make him a quality pass rusher at the next level. Hopefully he can stay healthy to make an impact at the next level. He may need a season to adjust to the league, but he should eventually start in a 3-4 system.

Full Chad Thomas Scouting Report

4-3 DE who mainly played in a 5 tech. He was moved inside for sub-packages. Has great height and weight for the NFL position. Above average arm length and has very large hands.

Great Athletic Ability, quickness, explosive, moves very well in open space, change of direction is above average. Good Competitive Toughness, hustles, will chase down opponent all the way down the field if needed, will come back into the game despite an injury. Great Play Speed, shows his closing speed and acceleration, could be put in coverage because of his ability to move smoothly. Good Pass Rusher, shows bend, speed rusher, has a couple of different moves, doesn’t repeat the same move over and over. Good Upfield burst, quick off the snap, does not matter if he is in a 4, 3 or 2pt stance, explodes into his opponent, pad level is low. Good Pursuit, effort and speed gives him a high grade, his closing speed will allow him to chase down some scrambling QBs.

Still learning the game and what he can do, needs to diagnose plays quicker like screens and runs. His strength doesn’t match his size, he will lose to certain TEs and can be demolished by above average OGs. His lack of strength will hurt him as a run defender, not going to consistently set the edge. He has the tools to have a huge advantage in hand use, but he still needs to learn how to use those tools. Needs to put more pop in his hands. Production was lower than what his athletic ability could live up to.

Overall, Thomas is a solid prospect who could become good if he learns the game a little more. His athletic ability will interest many teams. He could fit either a 3-4 or 4-3 system, but a 4-3 system is what he is used to and he should stay in that system.

Full Josh Sweat Scouting Report

Moved around on the DL. Primarily played in a 4pt stance, in a 3 or 5 tech, but he really showed what he was capable of in a 7 tech. A large edge, great height and weight, sculpted muscle frame, very long arms and legs, not much width for lower body. Has had some durability issues, including a major knee injury (still wears brace).

Elite Athletic Ability, despite his durability issues, he has unbelievable ability, explosiveness, fluid hips, lateral quickness, shows leaping ability, can be used in space because of his ability to move. Good Competitive Toughness, some willingness to chase down opponent, will get in the middle of a pile if needed, plays through injuries. Great play speed, can be used for stunts, wins with speed rather than strength. Good Pass Rusher, shows bend at the waist, and his speed will allow him to be useful on the edge. Good Use of Hands, very long arms help create separation, quick, placement is usually inside, impressive swim move, rip move is quality as well.

Needs to learn the game more, doesn’t diagnose misdirections, no recognition for screen plays, fooled easily by play actions. Really struggled to create much penetration when playing in a 3 tech. Does not have the leg strength to do it. He is not much of a run stuffer, doesn’t quite understand the outside contain rules, but he is a very impressive tackler – wraps up, uses a lot of force to bring his opponent to the ground. Very slow off the snap, consistently the last one to the POA, the much bigger DL are quicker than he is, pad level is a tad high. However, on a 3rd and long situation, he is the first off the line and explodes into opponent, I want to see that every play. His durability may be a concern for some teams and his medicals will be very important.

Overall, Sweat is a good prospect with a lot of potential, but there is risk involved. He must learn the game before being thrown in there and he must improve his overall strength. In my opinion, he best fits as a 4-3 DE in a 7 or even a wide 9 tech. If he’s not in those techs, he should be moved to a 3-4 OLB role.

Full Da'Shawn Hand Scouting Report

Played on a stacked DL where he had to wait for his opportunity. Played in a 5 tech primarily but moved around to a 3 tech for sup packages. He has had trouble with the law, had a DUI this past offseason. He has all the physical tools needed to be an NFL DE. Large hands, long arms, great height and weight, build is not perfect, but it’s close to it.

Athletic Ability is solid, change of direction, agility, balance is okay. Good Mental Processing, understands how to position himself to take on blockers with a good chance of making a play in the backfield. Great Play Strength, a strong DE, will demolish the smaller opponents, wins vs average OL. Good vs Run, understands the outside contain rules, has the leverage from preventing big holes from opening in the middle. Hands are more powerful than quick, placement is solid. Good Upfield Burst, can sometimes be the first off the LOS, easy to tell he is above average with his quickness and explosiveness, then he translates his explosiveness into power.

Could be more of a competitor on the field, sometimes he will give half-effort when chasing opponent. Not going to be used as a speed rusher at the next level, does not have much elusive ability in open space. It would be surprising for him to be a productive pass rusher at the next level, not much bend, lacks the variety of moves needed. Pursuit is a mixture of willingness and closing speed, and he is lacking in both.

Overall, Da’Shawn Hand has some off-the-field concern and some teams may already have him off their board, but he is still a quality player. At the least, he should be a role player with a chance of becoming a solid starter down the road. I would like to see him play as a 3-4 DE, but if he was put in a 4-3 system to be used as a big end, he should be fine.
