Tight Ends

Full Dallas Goedert Scouting Report

Played in somewhat of a spread offense at South Dakota State. Saw action in the slot, outside receiver and in-line blocking TE. Good Height and weight for a receiving TE, long arms and legs. Athletic build.

Athletic Ability is Great, flexible hips, quick for size, leaping ability, shows great body control, very balanced and explosive ability. Good Mental Processing, moves with the QB on a scramble, knows the game situation – down and distance, recognizes a CB blitz when in the slot and looks for the ball sooner. Great Competitive Toughness, shows determination to get his opponent to the ground, plays through the whistle, confident in his game. Great play speed, for a TE he moves incredibly well, has some elusive ability, shows he has the deep speed to break away from some LBs. Good Play Strength, a difficult tackle for the smaller opponents, is a mismatch for the secondary, a nice stiff arm. Great Hands, catches away from his body, reliable in short areas, red zone target because of his ability to catch the ball at it’s highest point. Good Job catching in traffic, positions himself the best chance to make the catch, can make the catch despite sustaining a big hit.

He is not a run blocker, he tried to do it in college, but it was more of a mirroring technique to get in the way. He needs to also keep his head up and butt down, hand placement needs to be more inside. His routes tend to drift away from his stem. He does not make hard cuts; His routes are more rounded. Not used much for pass blocking situations, but when he is he does not stay engaged with his assignment and will hardly win.

Overall, Goedert has a lot of potential in the right system. He should be used in an offense that likes to spread the defense by putting the TE in the slot. His athletic ability should be used as much as possible.

Full Mark Andrews Scouting Report

Played in a spread offense at Oklahoma where he was the primary receiving target. He was considered as a slot TE, rarely ever used as an in-line TE. Large TE with athletic build, more of a big receiver than a natural TE.

Athletic Ability is Great, flexible hips, quick for size, leaping ability, very balanced and explosive ability. Good Mental Processing, great vision – sees the open areas of the field, understands his best option on how to get into the end zone. Good Competitive Toughness, shows the same level of effort on every play, will play through injuries. Great Play Speed, shows elusive ability, will make a defensive back miss, very fast for a TE, has the deep speed to make a homerun. Good Play Strength, has good lower body strength that allows him to break a tackle from the smaller opponents. Great Hands, high points the ball, very reliable in all stages of the field, has good concentration along the sideline to make the completion. Good catch in traffic, his strong hands will allow him to make grabs despite the heavy coverage, not afraid the closing defenders. Great Route Running, good body control to adjust on his route, does a great job of getting in and out of breaks, nice release that creates a solid amount of separation.

He is not a run blocker, struggles to keep his hips square with his opponent, struggles to get front side, not much experience dealing with defensive lineman. Will struggle as a pass blocker as well, not much experience at all, but needs to work on overall technique. On his route running he likes to break too early and it gives away his route concept.

Overall, Andrews is going to be one of the top receiving TEs in the league. He should primarily be used as a slot TE in the league. It’s unlikely he would work as a in-line TE at the next level.

Full Hayden Hurst Scouting Report

Started his professional career as a baseball player. He will be 25 when the regular season starts for the NFL Season. Good height and weight for an in-line blocking TE and can be used in the slot like he was in college.

Athletic Ability is solid, shows solid lateral movement, some quickness. Hips are a little stiff, but overall, it’s manageable, balance could improve. Good Mental Processing, understands who to pick-up pre-snap, identifies man/zone coverage, consistent at picking up correct assignment. Good Competitive Toughness, puts his body on the line, fights for the first down, continues to fight until the opponent is on the ground. Good Play speed, a little faster than I first thought, capable of being used as a H-Back at the next level, will show a little deep speed, can be used in pulling. Good Play Strength, can handle bigger opponents, strong hands, not often would you see him lose vs average talent. Good Run Blocking, can create movement, takes great blocking angles for gap blocking, stays engaged with opponent, chips and moves to the next block smoothly. Good Route Runner, his understanding of positioning is very impressive, adjusts route to find the open zone of the defense, quick short routes. Good Hands, large and strong hands come in handy, capable of making some ridiculous one-handed grabs, reliable in open space, high points the ball, nice tracking ability deep downfield. Great Pass blocker, shows patience, hips are square to the LOS, consistent, keeps hands inside, technique is impressive, can handle the average DL.

His ability to catch in traffic needs to be more consistent, dealing with tight coverage that blocks some of his view will end with an incompletion, but if he can see the ball he has a solid chance. In blocking – run and pass, he struggles the most vs elusive or quick opponents, cannot stay engaged. Ran a lot of rub routes in college, but he needs to improve those, make it less obvious.

Overall, Hurst is a prospect that does everything well. He may not have an elite trait, but he can be a good starter in the NFL. I would like him to be used in similar fashion of his college days. Move him around at in-line, slot, and H-Back. Fits a gap running scheme, but he is smart enough to be in a zone scheme.

Full Mike Gesicki Scouting Report

Known for his basketball skills and has the frame of a basketball player. Very long arms, with not much build. He has great height, but for his size he is underweight.

Great Athletic Ability, insane leaping ability, a true dunker in basketball, good body control, balanced. Good Competitive Toughness, willing to hit opponents, puts his body on the line, shows fiery emotion after a big play. Good Play Speed, his long legs will give him some deep speed, could be used in the slot with his speed. Good Route Runner, nice job breaking down on short to mid routes, solid on sharp routes. Great Hands, catches away from his body, aware of the sideline to get his feet down and still make the catch, very large catching radius because of his long arms, very strong hands, capable of catching almost anything – reliable. Great Catch in traffic, can make a grab in double coverage, catches over a defender, not a defender who is closing in. Good Pass Blocker, stays in front of the much larger opponent, good use of hands – patient and times his punches correctly.

His lack of build will be a concern at the next level, it may force him to not be an in-line TE. Which limits how many schemes he will fit. Needs better upper body strength, will not break tackles from strong opponents. He will struggle to create movement as a run blocker. Has shown lack of concentration when tracking some passes.

Overall, Gesicki is a good receiving TE. He will likely play as an H-Back or in the Slot until he gains the strength to be used as a in-line blocker. He may only be used as a role player until then.

Full Ian Thomas Scouting Report

Thomas was used as an H-Back at Indiana, was also utilized in the slot. He has the physical tools to be an NFL TE. His height is about average, great build and weight, large hands and long arms.

Athletic Ability is great, moves very well in open space, shows his fluid hips, some explosiveness, great core strength to stay balanced, tested great at the combine. Good Play Speed, shows some elusive ability, easy to tell he is a new generation type of TE, shows he can create separation vs a nickel LB by only using speed. Good Route Runner, nice job selling the double move, looks better on the longer routes, always seemed to be open vs Ohio State, shows a nice release at the top of his stem. Great Hands, can be a playmaker at the next level with his ability to make miraculous catches, catches away from his body, will make one handed catches if needed. Good Catch in traffic, has the concentration to track the ball despite having a defender near.

Mental Processing needs improvement, not much experience as an in-line blocker, needs to identify blitzes more. Didn’t see consistent 100% effort, but it’s not that bad. Play Strength could be better, has lost vs many DEs. Have not seen him break many tackles to create YAC. Still learning where to hit his opponent for run blocking, he has attempted blocks at the wrong angle meaning the defender is getting to the spot the RB wants to go. Also has a tough time staying engaged with opponent. Not much experience as a pass blocker because he is mainly running routes.

Overall, Thomas needs some time, but an Athletic player like him gives him a quality ceiling. A team that uses a heavy passing game would love him. He would likely be a role player who could eventually become a solid starter who will make a lot of great plays.

Full Troy Fumagalli Scouting Report

9-fingered TE at Wisconsin, ran a pro style offense where he was sometimes utilized as an H-Back. Solid height and his weight matches, doesn’t have great lower body build, upper is solid. Arm length meets the average length for a TE as well as hands.

Athletic Ability is solid, hips are a little tight, change of direction is slow, not great explosiveness. Good Mental Processing, adjusts with the QB when scrambling, reads LBs well and can find the open zones of the defense. Good Competitive Toughness, looked better later in the season, showed a lot more willingness to make a big hit on a defender – especially vs Michigan. Good Route Runner, loves the routes with little to no cuts, his route running allows the QB to have more space along the sideline, nice release for deeper routes. Great Hands, crazy to see how well he catches with only 9 fingers, catches away from his body, reliable, can make the over the shoulder grab. Great Catch in traffic ability, consistent vs physical coverage, focuses on the ball rather the big LB approaching, concentration is high.

Not going to wow anyone with his speed, burst/acceleration needs is below average, overall deep speed is below average as well. He needs to be able to break some tackles at the next level, but it’s unlikely to see that. Has lost to some DBs in strength matchups. For Run blocking, it unlikely he will move his opponent, staying engaged with his block is a little difficult, needs better positioning when blocking the second level. Shouldn’t be used as a pass blocker, does not stay squared, very little lateral movement, probably will never be able to anchor.

Overall, Fumagalli is a solid prospect, it’s incredible how well he catches with that big disadvantage. He is a receiving TE and would fit a pass heavy offense.
